LMT’s Kieninger division has developed a multiple tooth milling cutter system that is able to run at up to double the speed of a normal face mill.

LMT’s Kieninger division has developed a cutter that is able to run at up to double the speed of a normal face mill owing to the number of inserts it can carry maintaining the same rate of feed per tooth LMT has incorporated a small, very compact insert cartridge into its latest Feed-Jet, multiple tooth milling cutter system, IThe cutter requires lower torque from the machine spindle drive, has a high precision body, and the PCD-cartridge design enables special requirements to be defined such as high cutting depth, surface roughness and percentage contact area

The cutter body design also has a minimum number of separate components and utilises high precision stress-free friction clamping giving a simple fine adjustment of each cutting edge for perfect ‘flat’ running and minimal creation of rags or burrs.

The Feed-Jet cutter bodies range in diameter from 63mm with eight teeth to 125mm with 16 teeth.

The largest cutter can also be specified with an additional two teeth depending on the application.

The positive interlocking of each PCD cartridge unit requires a low torque setting that prevents the cartridge moving on final tightening and ensures each cartridge unit is set to precisely the same height.

* Automotive machining - LMT Kieninger’s Feed-Jet milling cutters have recently completed extensive trials in automotive applications.

Examples include the milling of joint faces on transmission housings, cylinder heads and crankcases as well as the milling of valve bodies.

These applications, said LMT of Coventry, UK, to manufacturingtalk, make high demands of surface finish and require excellent predictable tool life to contribute to higher machine spindle utilisation with minimum downtime.

Available with each cutter body are three main cartridge configurations for face and shoulder milling and a wiper insert.

However, there is also a special CT-cartridge with 75 deg lead angle and 0.2mm by 45 deg chamfer for semi-finish milling operations where the surface has to be prepared ready for a defined finish and flatness specification.
